About Margaret

I’m a horticulturist and landscape designer based in Napa, with decades of experience creating thoughtful, climate-appropriate landscapes throughout the Greater Bay Area. My work is rooted in collaboration—I help clients clarify and express their vision, using the best possible plant materials for the site, climate, and overall intent of the space.

Every design begins with a conversation. Sometimes it’s a focused exchange that takes just a few hours. Most times, it becomes a longer collaboration that continues until both of our visions evolve into a shared, fully realized plan. Throughout the process, I offer guidance on what will thrive, what will inspire, and what will create a deeper connection to the land.

I’m especially drawn to plants that not only look beautiful but also engage the senses and support the wider ecosystem, providing food and habitat to birds, butterflies, bees, and other native pollinators. I have a particular appreciation for native and climate-adapted species, not just for their resilience, but for the richness they bring to a landscape.

Depending on the needs of your project, I work with several trusted installation teams across the Bay Area. I personally select the highest quality plant materials available in the appropriate sizes and forms to support your vision—always with respect for your priorities, timeline, and overall investment.

While I’m proud to call Napa home, I enjoy the challenge and opportunities to work with clients throughout the Bay Area who are excited to create meaningful, lasting outdoor spaces.

I was born in Chicago and learned organic gardening from my mother in the 1960s. After studying Horticulture and Floriculture at Cornell University, I earned a B.S. in Plant Science from UC Davis with a Specialization in Landscape Design. I’ve spent over 30 years designing Bay Area landscapes that blend sustainable practices with my Midwestern roots. I stay grounded in composting, seed-saving, and organic and biodynamic methods—while I also enjoy making and tasting wine, floral arranging, and the full ground-to-table experience. I balance my work with yoga, Reiki, and walks with my Bernese Mountain Dog, Karuk.
